Track Of The Week: Glasvegas - Daddy's Gone

Back in 2008 Glasvegas swaggered out of their native Scotland riding a wave of hype which labeled them as the next great British guitar band. That hype was justified with their eponymous debut album which was filled with anthems anybody could singalong to, even if you didn't posses a thick Scottish drawl like frontman James Allen.

From that album came second single Daddy's Gone, a tale of a broken home that is racked with emotion from start to finish. This is mainly thanks to Allen's anguished delivery of lyrics such as 'Remember times you put me on your shoulders / How I wish it was forever you would hold us' that go from lamenting what's been lost to spiteful to sorrowful all in the space of a verse. Everything about this song is aiming for the epic; from the slashing guitars to the monumental chorus that already feels as if it's got an arena a full of people chanting it back, which is good going for a song written by a former footballer.
